I'm not sure ppl are getting the distinction between a queerphobic character and queerphobic writing or a colorist character and colorist writing. No surprise, but #Pvalley offers very good examples of having characters being problematic rather than the writing.
Re queerphobic characters NOT in writing let's use Uncle Clifford in #PValley. UC is non-binary, uses she/her pronouns and EVERYBODY in her circle uses her proper pronouns. When other characters don't, she or the ppl around her check them. This is a writing/ character dev choice.
Re colorist characters and NOT colorist writing, let's use Miss Crooked Letta. She makes colorist comments about light skin being better & Uncle Clifford checks her and calls her colorstruck. This is a writing/character dev choice to deconstruct -isms rather than perpetuate them
I think often about UC & LM's love story(no spoilers). The choice not to make the queer couple face violence for being in love?? That was a writing choice, a story choice, and it was so comforting to have writers to not only protect their queer characters but their queer audience
Through the UC/LM love story, the writers both drew attention to the violence queer people and queer couples face AND let the drama that unfolded in their love story be violence-free. I still tear up by that writing choice because it is RARE.
The writers handled them with so much love and care! That is huge. That matters. https://twitter.com/Pisceanluvher/status/1318396314246385664
