Listening to @DanBarreiroKFAN orchestrate a compelling and entertaining remembrance of Sid. Brings back so many Sid memories and stories.
I go way back with Sid, indirectly to my youth. My Dad worked for Strib for 40 years and he would bring @ikpanderson and me to the office to give my Mom a break. Turned loose, we had the run of the place. The golden moment on those trips was a Sid sighting.
My Dad spent hours at the Little Wagon with his advertising compadres. Occasionally Sid would make an appearance & they would revel in calling him "Sig". He was always so proud of being able to get under his skin....and making it back to Cambridge in one piece on those nights.
Post college, I was the caretaker at one of Sid's properties on Campus. This was during the Bullwinkles run and I wasn't a very good caretaker. His partner Al evicted and fired me on the same day after walking the halls and witnessing some debauchery in my apartment.
Eventually I found my way into the press box and the cross hairs. Post Chad and Dan split, he angrily referred to me as "Barreiro Junior"...which to this day cuts deep ;-). That was when I wasn't part of the "Mr. Asshole" army.
Later, I was fortunate to enjoy lunches with the Vikings' PR crew and Sid. As I was starting my real estate career he always took time to ask how things were going and would ask for stacks of business cards to share with his friends. And he would have salsa on his tie.
The last time I saw him was summer 2019 at the MN State Fair at the WCCO booth. Sports Huddle pre-show, at the end I got to do one segment on the air with Sid....
and when I was done I knew I had checked the last box I needed in my radio career. Like most Minnesotans, Sid had been a presence in my life since I was a child and my grandfather was grumping about him after a hit on WCCO with Steve Cannon.
Sitting on that stage with the most iconic of all Minnesotans - in the place we gather as a community each summer (mostly) - it was such a wonderful moment and I was so thankful to be able to spend that time on the air with him.
He'll never be replaced, and it's just wonderful to listen to Dan's show and hear the stories his friends are telling. Thinking of Chad and his family today, and all of Sid's friends.
