Historical dive: Many of the nearby faint dwarf stars were discovered by University of Minnesota astronomer Willem Luyten (1899-1994) who published a lot of his data in a long preprint series "Proper Motion Survey with the 48 inch Schmidt Telescope", No. 1 to No 67 (1/n)
(A preprint series is a sort of paper version of http://arxiv.org , youngsters!)
What a cursory google about Luyten doesn't seem to mention is his long vendetta with the astronomers of the Lick Observatory's proper motion program, which started off somewhat unprofessional and degenerated into full fledged literary foaming at the mouth
This vendetta was carried out in back and forth preprints in this Proper MotionSurvey series (official U Minnesota preprints!) and corresponding more measured replies from the Lick team in their own preprints. Alas, ADS does not have scans of the most extreme ones.
Here is one of the responses from Lick, for comparison

This thread brought to you by "If you thought only certain present-day astronomers were assholes, check out some of the all-time greats!"
I've had the xerox of this in my files since it came out in1981, but I was revisiting dwarf stars lately and decided that its absence on the internet needed to be fixed. Can you imagine deciding to publish such a screed in an official professional capacity?? Sigh.
I'm making fun of this awful rant of Luyten's, but can you imagine being a grad student at the receiving end of this sort of attack by a senior astron? And I've seen language in contemporary referee reports (not aimed at me) that is not much better. Please don't be like Luyten.
