My thoughts on the Luhnow interview:

1. None of us need to make a binary decision whether Luhnow knew/is an evil person or Luhnow didn’t know/is a good person. The answer is never that simple.
2. Now, did I find Luhnow to be credible and did I find his statements to be plausible? For the most part, yes. Although a GM is in and around the clubhouse, he generally is not in the dugout during games, so it’s plausible that he never knew.
3. However, that does not get Luhnow off the hook. On September 15, 2017, MLB specifically notified every team that the use of electronic sign stealing was illegal and forbidden, and Luhnow should have addressed this with Hinch and the players if necessary. He never did.
4. Also, like it or not, Luhnow was the boss of the roster and the buck stops with him. If he was not in the position to know if his players were cheating, then he should have been. The boss has to be accountable.
5. That being said, do I feel bad for Luhnow? Yes, somewhat. Whether fairly or not, he has been somewhat scapegoated by MLB and if he truly was unaware, then that does really suck.
6. He was right to point out that all kinds of people were around the clubhouse all the time and no one assumes that they must have known about the cheating.
7. He lost me on the Taubman response. He created that situation by trading for Osuna and I don’t really find it plausible that he didn’t approve the press release in advance. Sure he’s not the team’s PR or legal but come on. He’s either lying or stupid and he’s not stupid.
8. I’ve given up trying to figure out people’s unspoken motivations. Maybe he wants to get back in baseball, maybe he wants to clear his name, maybe he’s just still super pissed. Whatever.
9. The upshot of all this was that Luhnow is a brilliant GM who constructed the only Astros team to win the World Series, and now he’s gone, and that window won’t be open as long as it could have. And that’s a damn shame, no matter who’s at fault. /end
