how to properly use tw’s: a thread
ok i’ve seen a lot of improper use of tws lately, so i thought i’d make this thread!
tw’s are important to keep the internet a safe space for everyone. it makes it easy for people to mute words they do not want to see, and it gives warning for those who do want to see.
i’ve seen a lot of people say “life won’t give you trigger warnings” and i want to explain why that argument is wrong. yes, life doesn’t give tw’s, that’s why so many people come to the internet- this is a safe place where people shouldn’t have to worry about that.
now, onto proper usage! here are some examples of INCORRECT usage:
tw/example
tw//example
tw // ex*mple
etc.
here is an example of PROPER usage.

it’s important to separate words and slashes so that people can properly mute the word and phrase. based off of other threads and things i have read, the proper way is TW, space, two slashes, space, topic.
this makes it easy for people to mute that exact phrase so they won’t have to worry. also, it is VERY important to put dashes/space in between the warning and the content. if there’s no space, people are forced to see it anyway.
also, do not censor words with the stars (*). this makes muting the word useless. censoring the word makes no difference, and it does more harm than good.
as i have said, this thread is based off of other threads and perspectives i have seen (all of which say the same thing). if there are any issues with this thread, please let me know!
i’ve seen a lot of improper tw’s lately and i want to keep the internet safe for everyone. please ty to spread. :)
