@nateliason is one of my favourite bloggers/content creators from the Twittersphere.

A few weeks ago, he got interviewed by @brandonthezhang on his podcast.

Here are 11 insights that I got from their conversation on idea flow, books, 30-year thinking and more.

1/ On idea flow

Diversify your inputs to make sure you get exposed to new and different ideas instead of repeating the same thing over and over.

Get recommendations from friends or people you& #39;re following on Twitter (make sure these are diversified as well).
2/ On writing for yourself vs performance

"The best writing is the writing you don& #39;t care if anyone reads. It& #39;s what you create to help yourself understand and clarify what& #39;s bouncing around in your head." - @nateliason
3/ On which books to read

You should optimize for life-changing books instead of the number of books you& #39;ve read.

Spend more time thinking about what could these books be and how to find them.
4/ On book recommendations

When someone recommends you a book.

Ask the person what did they learn from it when someone recommends a book or article.

This forces them to explain why it& #39;s worth your time to read this article/book and it helps with the filtering.
5/ On cities

In the same way that you want to cultivate a deep romantic relationship with a partner, build a relationship with your city.

You get to establish your life in a city and able to create relationships with local restaurants and craftspeople.
6/ On opening and closing Cup & Leaf café

- You don& #39;t always need to cover for your loss.
- Prepare for the absolute worst-case scenario.
- Think of it as not losing money, but paying tuition for a very expensive class.
7/ On sending cold emails

- Most people do it wrong.
- If you& #39;ve been sending out a lot of emails and are not getting any responses -> it probably sucks.
- Make sure to have a good value prop (and not just write about me me me).
- Have a very specific ask.
8/ On 30 year thinking

Ask yourself "Is this thing that I& #39;m doing or this person that I& #39;m building a relationship with something I want to have in my life for the next 30 years?"

Serves as a good filter for what you want to do and who you want to spend your time with.
9/ On health

You can feel much better if they paid more attention to what they eat.

Have an index of areas that you want to improve over time. Then gradually fix portions of it is better than trying to fix everything right away, failing and then going back to your ways.
10/ How religion can help you with habits

With religion:
Everybody sins. What& #39;s important is how you reconcile that with yourself and God.

With habits:
Similarly, with all of your habits, you are going to fuck up. What& #39;s important is how you fix that with yourself.
11/ On being intellectually honest

- Share what you get right, but also what you get wrong.
- Say when you love someone. But also say when you don& #39;t like something.
I also send out The Kaizen Newsletter every Tuesday and share thoughts on productivity, self-improvement and new things I learned throughout the week.
