the president of northwestern had more smoke for students protesting for Black lives then he did for actual racists in his emails “committing to social justice” over the summer. he tells students their actions are “an abomination and you should be ashamed of yourselves” [thread]
bc students protested outside his home, he actually said students should “consider how their parents + siblings would feel if a group came to their homes in the middle of the night to wake up their families with such vile + personal attacks.” i thought of breonna taylor’s family
he said he was “disgusted” by Black students protesting for Black lives who he said “chose to disgrace the university.” this president who rains down with rage over being mildly inconvenienced when Black students are fighting for their lives is the disgrace.
he was so personally hurt by students saying “fuck morty” and calling him a “pig” as in “cop” that he suggested students were “dangerously close” to antisemitism. this is an outrageous accusation. what about jewish comrades esp Black jewish students fighting for abolition?
i am so livid that i’m barely making sense and i didn’t think this thread through in advance. but northwestern’s president needs to resign. imagine calling Black students protesting for Black lives an “abomination” and “disgusting” in 2020.
in june, the president was saying that he and the university “vehemently opposed anti-blackness” and not even 4 months later he sends a profoundly anti-Black email in response to Black students fighting for Black lives
northwestern said “Black lives matter” BUT only as long as it doesn’t inconvenience us or make us uncomfortable and certainly not when it disturbs the peace at the president’s mansion.
the president ended his email threatening “accountability” and questioning whether students had lost their “sense of humanity” in their fight for justice. this is incendiary and i have no words to describe how upsetting it is.
please follow and support @copsoutofNU. these students are doing the work of Black liberation and showing how abolition is a practice in their ethics of care + organizing. they are taking incredible risks to build a better world. please pay attention to what’s happening here.
