I think that’s certainly.. a way to look at it. But I’m gonna have to hard disagree on it 1) Being fake as Setsuna and 2) Making her one-dimensional: Because I think there should be a clear separation between personality and character traits in this discussion. https://twitter.com/lesbiankasumin/status/1318253620803047425
Nana is definitely not nearly what her true self is, Setsuna is a passionate, excitable and curious person who sets goals for herself, but she has worries about those around her.
(Nana isn’t really allowed to show any of this, BUT she does show other traits of her own, more on that later.) Those are all part of her *personality* as it shines through in everything she does and how she interacts with others—
—and how she reacts to certain situations and in this aspect she is quite multifaceted! We have seen all of these examples in a lot of the work presented such as the comics, interviews and anime episodes as well as SIFAS itself.
Now the way she chooses to express it through her hobbies and performances (Which is already way more varied than how you seem to describe it) is very consistent which shows that this has been built up by her as a way go express her pent up feelings, both negative and positive—
—however, you seem to confuse these *character traits* of her gushing with her *personality*. Her traits are that she’s a nerd, and (much like real life nerds, myself included) she feels a certain connection to the works she consumes and thus expresses herself through them!
I’m sure you and other people can relate in some way, shape or form. These feelings aren’t fake, they evidently mean a lot to her. And guess what? She has quite a bit to talk about too!
She isn’t covering up for an empty husk, she is a overflowing husk that knows how to filter her emotions through a specific manner. She has human emotions and original thoughts, she has multiple aspects within that personality.
If anything the fact that she presents this colorful inside of hers in this way makes her even more multifaceted as opposed to a character how would just naturally convey these feelings in a more paced manner, it’s what makes her unique.
Setsuna Yuki is a construct but not a mask, Setsuna Yuki is an uncapped soda can that has been given a good shake!

She has a lot of depth, but it’s not through her one-dimensionality, but rather her many sides that she just doesn’t GET to show.
As for Nana, while she doesn’t express Setsuna’s more positive feelings, she is part of Setsuna’s personality, showing off her before-mentioned outlook on the expectations placed on her, and her caring, more responsible and dedicated side...
... As well as the secret concern and sadness that she feels for those around her, if the girl wearing those two sides of Nana and Setsuna were fake and empty, there is no way they could be able to share such problems and thoughts that when combined into Nana/Setsu...
make a well rounded character!
Of course this is just my good ole opinion
(This got a bit long but I think this sums up my thoughts for now)
