;; DISRESPECT ON ASIAN CULTURE
— coming from an asian person
Asians have been disrespected throughout everything. Some good examples are
• using asian words for aesthetic reasons
• the fox eye trend
• using kawaii, yandere, tsundere, etc. as aesthetics, or even in your vocab if you're not japanese
-
+
• sexualizing / wearing asian specific clothes (ao dai, yukata, kimono, cheongsam, hanfu, qipao, etc.) when not asian
• using asian names when not asian (ESPECIALLY TO ANIME & KPOP FANS.)
• Using the word "cute" to describe asian adults (I'll explain this in the next tweet.)
THE WORD CUTE —
Cute is used as a synonym for adorable, which is associated with small childlike things.
The reason why it's disrespectful is because the stereotypes of asians being small and 'cute' by default.
Obviously this does not apply to everyone-
+ make sure that if you're calling an asian person cute, they're okay with it.
It also depends on context, when, why, who, etc.
Honestly just ask first if you're unsure, asking does less harm than not.
No, asians are not sensitive for being offended by these things, no POC is. The reason why we're seem as sensitive is because the disrespect and to extension, racism, is deeply normalized, especially with the popularity of anime and kpop.
; ANIME AND KPOP
Anime and KPOP are not bad. The fans are rarely bad too, it's normally just the vocal minority that is bad.
I mention them a bit in this thread because lots of people on the internet like to poke fun at the fans and some people take it too far and start -
+ insulting the source, race and culture itself.
Plus some of the bad fans participate in fetishizing the culture.
