It's my birthday week! Which is always a thing, and which we ABSOLUTELY deserve for birthdays in the hellscape that is 2020.
For the second year, I'm using my birthday as an excuse (as if I need one) to raise money for @PeoplesParity. https://actionnetwork.org/fundraising/mollys-birthday-fundraiser/

As a means of continually bumping this fundraiser to the top of your TL, each day this week I'm going to post a bit about what @PeoplesParity has been working on, and what your money would be going to.
First: The fight to stop Amy Coney Barrett and #UnrigTheCourts.
First: The fight to stop Amy Coney Barrett and #UnrigTheCourts.
For the last month, PPP has been organizing to stop ACB's confirmation. We've protested in D.C. and New York, held organizing trainings so that folks can organize in their own communities, put on teach-ins on what it means to #UnrigTheCourts, and more. https://twitter.com/PeoplesParity/status/1316468943687749636?s=20
A donation to PPP enables us to keep fighting as the Senate get closer to voting on Barrett's confirmation.
Even more importantly, it lets us build out a movement to ensure we never again find our rights threatened by the death of an unelected justice. https://actionnetwork.org/fundraising/mollys-birthday-fundraiser/

Day Two: In just over a year, PPP has started chapters on 12 law school campuses — and counting! We fully fund each chapter, so they aren't dependent on their law schools (or law firms) for funding, something that has stifled legal activism in the past.
We focus on building cross-campus collaboration (incl. through weekly meetings with reps from each chapter) because organizing, especially in law school, is hard. @PeoplesParity is working to address this by building out a robust infrastructure to support law student organizing.
Donations to @PeoplesParity make sure we can fund our chapters & support our campus organizers, & that we do it all while making sure organizing happens according to our values, not the values of law schools or BigLaw donors.

Day Three (you can tell we're getting closer to my birthday because today the person administering my COVID test wished me a happy early birthday!): This spring, law students around the country started losing their summer jobs.
At the same time, many legal service providers were being stretched thinner than ever as the pandemic began to wreak havoc across vulnerable communities.
Seeing these dual needs, @PeoplesParity partnered with Justice Catalyst & the Systemic Justice Project to respond.
Seeing these dual needs, @PeoplesParity partnered with Justice Catalyst & the Systemic Justice Project to respond.
In the span of a month, we built the COVID-19 Rapid Response + Systems Summer Institute. We brought on 115 full-time law student fellows, and partnered with 50+ public interest legal and advocacy organizations to match students with projects and placements.
In addition to enabling our fellows to complete over 20,000 hours of service, we put on comprehensive programming focused on justice-oriented lawyering. It's one of the @PeoplesParity projects I'm proudest of.

Day Four: @PeoplesParity was founded in part to challenge the coercive tools lawyers have developed to strip workers and consumers of their power. Nothing serves as a better example of these coercive tools than forced arbitration clauses. https://www.thecrimson.com/article/2020/5/27/commencement-2020-ppp/
In 2018, @PeoplesParity started organizing against forced arbitration clauses, using the power of law students to improve conditions in law firms for all workers—most importantly non-legal staff—to raise awareness around the harm of coercive contracts in *all* workplaces.
This advocacy has resulted in thousands of workers being freed from forced arbitration clauses, and has contributed to broader advocacy efforts, including the passage of the Forced Arbitration Injustice Repeal Act in the House of Representatives! https://news.bloomberglaw.com/business-and-practice/kirkland-ellis-drops-arbitration-for-non-attorney-staff

Almost forgot about this thread!! Day five of birthday week, and reason five as to why you should consider donating to PPP.
This summer, Mitch McConnell made clear that his top COVID priority was not protecting people, but protecting corporate profits.
This summer, Mitch McConnell made clear that his top COVID priority was not protecting people, but protecting corporate profits.
He was doing everything he could to enact blatant corporate immunity, giving businesses (and universities!) a complete pass for putting people's lives at risk.
@PeoplesParity immediately started organizing. For an overview of some of what we got done

The pressure of organizers and advocates around the country worked. Despite McConnell's best efforts, he wasn't able to get corporate immunity passed. Corporate America wasn't let off the hook, and millions of Americans retained their ability to seek redress in court.
This is the type of work we're doing at @PeoplesParity: organizing around the wonky issues that might slide under the radar, but which have massive impacts on people's lives.
