to start off i just wanna say i love u /p to all my south asian/arab/brown folk out here. y’all are so beautiful mwah <3
south asia consists of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka
how many of these have you heard of? because the only brown representation seen in the media is Indian or terrorist
most disney channel kids shows usually have the token Indian kid who’s main purpose is comedic relief. it may not look like a big deal but growing up with these characters as our only representation is pretty damaging to the self esteem
not only does it tell south asian kids that this is who they are, it teaches everyone else that brown people have to fit this stereotype. pretty much every south asian i know has been compared to these characters.
when the only brown people you see on tv fit this scrawny nerdy stereotype, its no big surprise we get called curry eaters on the regular
the fact that these shows have these episodes should be considered a hate crime /lh
black butler was the first anime i saw that had south asian representation. i watched it and saw some heavy ass accents (no other characters had accents) and tons of curry jokes :/
all of south asia is expected to be happy with this crappy representation that acknowledges indians as the only brown people and then proceeds to make a joke out of them
growing up pakistani and never seeing anyone that looked like me on tv was definitely one of the most hurtful parts of my childhood.
on top of this, the desi community’s obsession with fair skin is a damaging ideal. girls are expected to bleach their skin and stay out of the sun just to stay “fair”.
most bollywood “it girls” are seen as beautiful because of their light skin or light eyes
these ideals come from the British colonizing India and pushing the Aryan beauty standard onto them. most south asians that fit these beauty standards are mixed with european because a lot of indian women were raped by british colonizers
why do minorities show racism to other minorities when we really should be sticking together? the amount of time other poc have been racist toward south asians but got away with it because theyre not white is shocking
south asians (asians in general) are stereotyped to be nerds because their immigrant parents/family force them to study harder. what people dont know is that asians were used to create a model minority. to make black people look uneducated after slavery, minorities from other+
- countries were expected to pass tests in order to get their citizenship in america. our families needed to have high education standards because that was how they worked to get into america.
somehow being studious turned into something bad when it comes to asians because it makes them a nerd? i will never understand that.
we’re mocked for our food, spices, skin tone, accents, music and our culture is a joke to them. we’re all grouped under one label and it’s basically impossible to break these stereotypes
now may i add that Never Have I Ever is the worst Indian representation i have seen in my life? i may not be indian but that show reeks
Mindy Kaling might just be the most white washed Indian in America, yet she is the voice of India here? i hate the term whitewashed but how this woman is expected to represent all of us when she can’t speak her native language?
NHIE tried to break Indian stereotypes by enforcing other ones and was honestly the most embarrassing thing ive ever had to watch.
i think Mindy Kaling owes every brown person $100 for adding this disgusting ass line
while we’re at it, fuck Priyanka Chopra
some personal experience: my cousins dad died when she was young and she had a stroke later which paralyzed her left arm. she said this show is offensive.
having Devi hate her culture isnt cool or breaking stereotypes!! we dont have to completely separate ourselves from our culture in order to earn your respect!!
muting this thread but i’d just like to say that indians and pakistanis hating on eachother is so fucking dumb!!! we both have corrupt governments and that still isnt an excuse to hate the people.
