Watched Scott Manley’s “ugliest rockets” video and have to say I can’t entirely agree. The shuttle ET looks pretty stable to me - the only problem is I have no knowledge of the core stage. I would say that RS-25s for a Saturn V stage 1? However, if you’re going to entirely (1/2)
Bring back the Saturn, I’d be sure they’d just use some type of F-1B engine. It seems, imo, more practical than SLS. Instead of RS-25, if you REALLY want a full send, install a hydrolox engine with the thrust of an F-1. Dare to say the setup better than RS-68...? (2/2)
I’ve just found that apparently there are 5 RS-68A engines on a Saturn V stage one fed by 2 external tanks and then to an unknown second and third. The lower section used SRBs and RS-100s - upscaled to 68Bs. Next uses 5 J2-Xs and lastly 2 J2-Xs.
The baby design is like an old atlas. Looks like 6SSMEs (fueled by ETs ofc) in the outer ring that breaks off to fall down with the aid of parachutes. They’d use around 20 RL10s for the center. Seems like a stage-and-a-half design to me.
