One of my mentees, Cedric Mutebi, is in his 1st year at Wayne State University (Detroit, MI) medical school! This is after his white coat ceremony. A native of Detroit, Cedric was an outstanding basketball/football player in high school.
Each year, 10 students get to go to undergraduate school for 3 years, and then go on to Medical school.

FOR FREE. Undergraduate tuition, room and board? Free. Medical school tuition? Free.
Cedric chose Wayne State University. During his summer stint, of course my wife and I made sure he was well fed, laundry done, and whatever else he needed. He did research with the American Association of Medical Colleges asking why more Black athletes aren't . . .
. . . pursuing medicine as a career, and at NIH researching why more Black patients reject heart transplants (among other things) than others.

While he was in DC, Cedric worked with the Congressional Black Caucus. At Wayne, he organized training for 1K for CPR.
FIN/ One day, he'd like to be a neurosurgeon.

But it all began with his parents, and of course, his focus on saving lives and serving others.

I am proud he calls me and my wife his mentor.
FIN/FIN

It is not ironic, or an accident, that Wayne State University's program was started and is led by a Black man, a doctor who once played basketball in college, and graduated from Harvard Medical School, Dr. M. Roy Wilson.
