🔥Person centred care thread🔥

Person centred care is not which modality or interventions you use!

PCC seems to get discussed mostly in relation to which interventions to use unfortunately

McWhinney described it as

“Seeing the world through the patients eyes”

1/
You could quite easily give a person the intervention you think they expect it even actually ask for without providing PCC.

So perhaps it is about treatment. But not intervention. There is a distinction between the 2

Treatment is how people are treated as well, people

2/
PCC has a number of components.

Communication - Listening, correctly interpreted and discussion that is tailored to the person and their level of understanding

4/
Education.

This is more than just than an exchange of facts. Instead integrated into the context of the person experiencing the problem.

@MyCuppaJo likes to say “makes biographical and biological sense”

5/
Empowerment & support

Putting people in charge of their own recovery and responsibility in the process is a large part of the PCC model

6/
Although intervention should be collaboratively discussed and agreed upon it seems to feature quite lightly in the literature on PCC

Interaction and how HPCs treat (not interventions treating 😉) people seem to underpin the PCC model

8/
So if the most discussion around PCC happens around interventions then maybe this misses the point of the PCC model a touch

Preference is important but this is much more than just interventions.

It’s in all of the aspects discussed above!
