BREAK: The Welsh lockdown is confirmed. Welsh FM @MarkDrakeford has announced Wales will go into a national lockdowm from Friday until 9th November. All will be told to stay at home while pubs, restaurants and non-essential shops will shut.
No 10 was fond of saying in spring/summer that the approaches of the different devolved nations were far more similar to Westminster's than might at first appear. Was a lot of truth in that. It's not true now. We've got clearly divergent covid containment policies across the UK.
Welsh Labour policy is now aligned to UK Labour policy. If the lockdown works in Wales but numbers get out of control in England, clearly that will be a big political problem for the government, as there is now a control for Lab national policy at work in the UK.
Remember, 15 of Wales' 22 counties were already under some form of local restriction. But clearly these measures are far more severe.
No spring style furlough for Welsh biz. There's new scaled down furlough but not clear who'll be entitled. I've just asked Welsh govt-they said they're in discussions with HMT and will get back to me. Not ideal for it to be unclear when biz are being asked to close from Friday...
. @Adamprice, leader of @Plaid_Cymru: “A fire break is a last resort and should only be used in an emergency. We are now in an emergency.” Says Plaid will support the Welsh government.
