#fela Look and Laugh is one of my best Fela tracks. He poured his whole heart into it. Fela was a lone voice and he lived/died for what is happening at the moment. Soon, I will do a complete thread on Fela's protest music and how they will forever remain relevant. A thread...
Listen to Sorrow, Tears and Blood to understand why (1) there hasn't been this kind of uprising in recent times (2) Why older Nigerians are asking the young ones to stay at home.
I must pause here to commend this generation. It was not until Fela died that he was regarded a real hero-this generation was responsible for that. Before then, he was a a degenerate brutalised by successive military governments and vilified by many of the people he fought for.
Listen to Beasts of No Nation to (1) understand the silence of the government and the stance it is gradually adopting-"This uprising will bring out the beast in us" (Pieter Botha) (2) realise that nothing has changed nor will change if we keep quiet.
Listen to Shuffering and Shmiling to understand why many preachers, persons in authority and "influencers" are silent.
Power Show is another powerful track which explores our general obsession with power. From top to bottom.
Fela morphed from entertainer to a musician who understood, and used, the power of protest music. He fought the army-which was far more brutal and suppressive than what we have now with our politicians and policemen. Fela lived and died for #EndSARS and all forms of oppression.
