The Nigerian Police is collaborating with the International Committee of the Red Cross and other development partners on the training of the new Special Weapons and Tactics Team which commences on Monday (today).
The first set of trainees are about 1,850 members who are slated for the first three -week training holding at the Police Mobile Force Training School, Ila Oragun, Osun State and the PMF Training School, Ende Hills, Nasarawa State.
According to Force spokesman, DCP Frank Mba, the SWAT, which replaced the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) owing to mass protests that rocked the country against the very many atrocities of the special unit.
However, operatives of the new unit, SWAT, will be trained in humanitarian laws, police conduct in a conflict situation, human rights- especially in the use of force and firearms, arrest and detention, among others.
Other areas that the operatives will be trained in include "modern-day police ethics and values, intelligence-led policing, operation planning/tactical decision-making processes, hostage rescue tactics and operation, weapon handling, first aid/basic life-saving skills,…
