“We understand that an actor is saying the words provided to them but with a layer of interpretive artistry. And by extension, we understand the subjectivity of these people comes into it… their background, their political stance, everything about them comes into the art.

“And I think these metaphors perhaps help us understand that translators are not neutral bodies, like just a ‘bridge’ you walk across without paying any attention to what the bridge is made of.

“That who we are and everything we bring to our craft is intrinsically going to shape the work itself. And therefore, translation becomes a political act. And what we do is a form of artistry. That takes us beyond any instrumental view of translated literature .”
