INTERNATIONAL BREAK WEEK 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿: This weeks feature shirt is a special one...Scotland’s ‘94/96 Home
This shirt was introduced in 1994, but its probably most famous for its use in the Euro ‘96 tournament. Despite being heavily associated with Scotland, this is the first time tartan appeared so prominently on their kit. Although on TV, the kit mostly looked plain dark blue
The kit debuted on the 23rd of March 1994, at home in a friendly against the Netherlands. It was raining, obviously, and Scotland lost 1-0
The first time the kit was used in competition was against Finland (away) in September 1994, in a Euro ‘96 qualifying match, which Scotland won, 2-0. Remember what I said about the kit looking plain dark blue on TV?
As a bonus, how good do the keeper shirts look in this match? 90s keeper templates were something else
The Tartan Army would get a bespoke tartan design for this shirt, comprising of charcoal, blue, green and lilac
However in 2017, the Scottish FA created a new team tartan, which you can buy on everything from kilts to face masks
Umbro were Scotland’s kit supplier until 2000. This was the first time ever they’d used navy shorts instead of white for the home kit (excluding one-off change and alternate strips)
The details and numbers on the shirt are amber. Euro ‘96 versions put numbers on the front too. I personally love numbers on the front of international shirts, what do you think? To me they look more ‘complete’, and in this case the amber looks great on the dark background
The tartan pattern wouldn’t be seen again until the ‘98 shirt, where it was used behind the crest and on the trim of the collar. Also while I was searching for it I found this picture of Mike Tyson
What do we think of the shirt paired with traditional white shorts and red socks? It’s not bad is it, although we lose those lovely amber numbers (they didn’t look right 😩). Still think I prefer an all navy kit for this shirt, what’s your thoughts?
Or how about a central badge like England’s ‘96 shirt?
The retail versions of this shirt had a purple strip of fabric running down the length of the sleeves, with the Umbro double diamond pattern. This wasn’t allowed to be worn in tournaments because of UEFAs branding rules...
...which means the Score Draw version has something in common with the Euro ‘96 match worn ones
I also found this picture somewhere a while back. Can anyone shed any light on it? Is the shirt on the left a prototype, ‘template’ or just fake? Either way, I’m glad we ended up with the one on the right
So that’s the end of our international break week. Only one thing left to do, tell us what you think! Vote in the poll below 👇🏻
Is this shirt worthy of the tartan army?
