A thread on the preliminary party vote results in several predominantly Maori towns in the Bay of Plenty and East Coast regions of New Zealand. These towns are all in the general electorate of East Coast, and are split between Ikaroa Rawhiti and Waiariki
Ruatoria (actually Rua-a-Tōrea) is a town on the East Coast which is 94.8% Maori, mostly affiliated to Ngāti Porou, where nearly half the population speaks Maori. Labour dominated here, with strong performances from Greens, NZF, and Maori. 380 voted on Maori roll, 117 on General
Waimana is in a heavily Maori, around 76%, most of whom are Tuhoe. Every single ACT and National vote cast in Waimana was cast on the general roll. Labour dominated here.
Ruatahuna is a Tuhoe town, in the remotest part of Te Urewera, surrounded on 3 sides by Te Urewera and on one side by Whirinaki Forest Park. Every voter here was Maori & voted on the Maori roll. National didn't get a single vote. Strong performance from Maori Party, Lab dominated
Minginui is a town near Ruatahuna where around 3/4 of voters voted on the Maori roll. The town is economically deprived, never having recovered from the loss of forestry jobs and other results of the economic reforms of the 80s. Every National vote was cast on the general roll.
Tolaga Bay is a popular holiday spot and a settlement north of Gisbourne, with a predominantly Ngati Porou population. This town is in Ikaroa-Rawhiti and has a much weaker Maori Party vote than the Waiariki towns. Of the 54 National votes, 52 were cast on the general roll.
Tokomaru Bay is mostly Maori, of the Ngati Porou iwi. It is located 35km north of Tologa Bay and is nearby Te Ara ki Hikurangi, the most sacred mountain to the Ngati Porou iwi. All ACT votes and all but two National votes cast here were cast on the general roll.
Generally what you see in these electorate is dominance from the Labour Party, and strong performances from the Greens, New Zealand First, and the Maori Party. National and ACT support is virtually absent from Maori communities, especially those who vote on the Maori roll.
Bonus ones I've already tweeted but are in the same region as these towns: https://twitter.com/Bob237874/status/1318003457769369600
