The Titans won in stunning fashion, taking home the W and outscoring the Houston Texans 42-36. The Titans continue to offer up exciting games and show no signs of being slowed down by recent events or lack of practice time.
Tennessee came out on top today in a thrilling showdown with Houston. This game was all about offense as both teams were on fire -- while both defenses showed multiple holes and gave up big plays which led to some entertaining football.
Ryan Tannehill led the charge, passing for 364 yards and 4 TDs while also giving up one interception and fumble. Tannehill looked poised in the pocket and has continued to be a strong leader on this team which was struggling offensively this time last year.
Despite the lack of practice last week, everyone looks to be in tune with one another and the points keep coming.
The receiving core for the Titans had a strong outing today with A.J. Brown leading the charge with 56 yards and two touchdowns after being out for three weeks. Ever since returning, Brown has showed his big play ability.
Adam Humphries also had a good game with 64 yards and a touchdown, showing why he was picked up last year with his great speed on the outside.
The surprise on the day for the receivers however is Anthony Firkser, who, after a quiet opening to the season, exploded today with eight catches for 113 yards and a score.
Jonnu Smith was forced out of the game with an ankle injury and we hope that he will be good to play next week, but if not, it looks like Tannehill will have no problems flexing to his backup tight end.
As always, Derrick Henry put the team on his back and powered down the field. He amassed an astounding 212 yards on the ground and an additional 52 yards in the air and twice reached pay dirt.
Somehow this line seems to not tell the full story, as watching it real time you would have thought he had 400 total yards. One of his biggest plays of the day came in the 4th with a 94 yard run ( https://twitter.com/NFL/status/1317910924473237504?s=20) for the touchdown.
Once he got into open air there was no one on the field that was going to catch him. His frightening combination of insane size and crazy speed is why he is one of the most dominant backs in the league right now.
If he keeps this up coach Vrabel’s job will be very easy, just give it to Henry every play. https://www.instagram.com/p/CGf6MCQhbUv/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link
Though the Texans were able to rally from a halftime deficit to force OT, they were ultimately no match for the Titans' running back. In epic fashion, Henry sealed the deal in OT for the Titans, bullying his way into the end zone for the game-winning score off of direct snap. https://twitter.com/Titans/status/1317922317218041859
The one downside to the game was the defense looking shoddy and playing some haphazard football. Granted the D is not at 100%, however they continue to get saved by the offense being able to march down the field.
I was hoping to see some more stops from the defenders against a weaker looking Texans offense.
Hopefully now that the facilities are open and the team can practice, the defense should be able to get on the right foot and make some more key stops during the game so that the offense doesn’t have to put up 40+ points each week.
Next week the team will face the Pittsburgh Steelers who won a commanding victory today against the Browns. The Steelers have a strong defense as well as a potent offense, which is missing some pieces and was still able to put up 38 points today.
Hopefully the Titans are able to plan and shut down Big Ben. If they are to have any hope of winning next week that is going to be key.
