This thread is my piece/perspective/rant on the sexualisation/fetishisation of healthcare workers (speaking AS a nurse myself).
In summary: I don& #39;t mind as long as it doesn& #39;t degrade the work we do - which is helping the sick.
Now,
This is an issue that many staff and people I work with absolutely loathe. But some dont mind it, thinking it humanises nurses.
(1/?)
I& #39;ve been asked a few times if this fetish view of nurses bothers me.
For me, like I said before. It depends on HOW they& #39;re portraying it.
- are they mocking the work we do? Are we just sex symbols? (And don& #39;t get me started on the bs that male nurses don& #39;t exist)
(2/?)
For example, in Banana Fish, Ash disguises himself as Nurse Barbara so they can escape the facility.
Now, he obviously uses his beauty to his advantage, and the nurse uniform itself comes off as "skimpy".
But, I saw it as just humour. I giggled and moved on. Harmless (3/?)
And I know most people get off on the idea of such a strict, professional and caring persona a healthcare worker evokes = to something sensual. I see the appeal myself eheh.
E.g. the amount of times doctors are seen as smart with a hidden sexy sides.
(4/?)
Oh btw, I& #39;m not stopping you in drawing Ash as nurse Barbara. Go ahead I don& #39;t mind. He looks hella cute in it ahahah (5/?)
For those who play kinky dress up as a nurse because it makes them feel sexy? Sure, go ahead.
Im not affected by what happens in your sex life.
Just remember, acknowledge and
Separate that imagery from ACTUAL nurses and related staff.
(6/?)
I want people to remember to SEPERATE this sexualised view from the REALITY.
Sexual harassment is real in this workplace. It& #39;s not all sterile and pristine as the media depicts.
That& #39;s why this issue is very sensitive to me and many many others.
(7/?)
We want society to take take us seriously and respect the work we do.
We DONT exist as = sex symbols or hot people who passed med school and make tones money
We exist to help YOU and the sick.
We work tireless unforgiving hours to help the sick.
We have families
We have lives

Ill probably keep adding to this thread since I have a LOT to say about this issue.
But to any of my moots who are nurses/ in the healthcare industry, feel free to correct or add things to my argument.
