no ones ever said anything to me explicitly but I have a feeling people probably wonder how I have such a large following when I rarely post art - SO id like to make a thread on my experience in developing a relatively big following thats interactive and active
(this might not always work of course - but its things I've also noticed on other accounts so at the very least its worth a shot)
So. In my opinion, the biggest thing is to NOT have an art only account - a storage account is more preferable (like @lilmanatees for me). You still get to post your art on your public account, but the art is retweeted onto another account for ease of access.
It also gives people a place to follow *just* your art, but again you get to post it where you have the biggest following (your public). its kind of a win-win in all regards imo

As for other content to post - literally just talk about your interests. I'm serious.
Don't shut up about your interests. You might have lul days where your follower count dips, but you might also have days where your follower count SPIKES. People follow passion - if youre passionate in what youre talking about itll become infectious
(its evidenced by my first set of tweets that blew up - I wouldnt shut the hell up about bnha because thats what I was into at the time and I ended up gaining like... 100 followers even though I only draw warriors. Some of them have still stuck around)
A lot of stuff is based on chance, but you can make pretty good progress by interacting with bigger accounts too - I personally retweet replies to me that I find funny ALL the time. I would suggest against making fanart for people with the expectation that youll gain followers-
-through drawing popular OCs/characters because ive had pieces of fanart of frogpaw that I retweeted that get like... no traction and I end up being the only retweet even though I try to boost it as much as possible :[ so if u draw fanart only do it because you want to
Especially if you can get onto peoples feeds through something as easy as a reply tweet - theres really no need to spend hours of your time drawing someone elses character when you can be drawing your passion projects instead
I DONT KNOW WHERE THIS THREAD IS GOING LMFAO idk if you have questions about how to build a following that isnt exclusively based on your art ask away here ill answer questions for a while https://curiouscat.me/seashores
