Step one: Look up local chapters of generally trustworthy national orgs.

3/12 DSA is for general democratic socialism and each chapter is different. One may be further left than another. One may focus on mutual aid, another may focus on pressure campaigns to pass legislation. Chapter list: https://www.dsausa.org/chapters/
4/12 Our Revolution is another general-purpose org, but was formed from Bernie's 2016 run so most of the work goes into passing GND, M4A etc or supporting candidates whose platforms include said legislation. There isn't an easy chapter list for this one.
5/12 Food Not Bombs is a loose collective focused on sharing free vegan/vegetarian food and they have chapters everywhere:

6/12 Step two: Get on Facebook. No, I'm not joking. Find a few local chapters of different orgs and compare their activity, e.g. # of page likes, frequency of posts, whether or not they regularly hold events. This will tell you which group is most active in your area.
7/12 If the page has an attached Group, whether it's private or public, you can see the administrators and moderators of the Group. Stalk their profiles. Are they involved in other leftist organizing? Is their record long? Are they a Biden shill?
8/12 These things will help you get an idea of which organizers around you are the most respected, as well as who's leftist and who's liberal. Once you decide on a chapter you want to volunteer with, reach out to them!
9/12 Don't be afraid to tell them you're clueless; they're going to bend over backwards to accomodate you because they want your help. Volunteers are hard to come by. Also, every leftist had a period of cluelessness before they were "radicalized."
10/12 Step three: Ask questions! Ask other volunteers what's going on in your city. Is this council member trustworthy? What do you think about [other local leftist group]? What's the one big obstacle in our way?
11/12 P.S. Sometimes, a local chapter of national orgs may not exist because they've been absorbed by something else. e.g., Southeast Ohio DSA is essentially defunct, but Athens Revolutionary Socialists have filled the void. Track the people instead to verify trustworthiness.
