The phase "tippers reward spacing" sets up a lot of stuff very early on that gives players a lot of incorrect information when it comes to how Marth actually functions in this game. Tippers and Sours are practically equal in terms of how they work.
Realistically you aren't going to be landing too many killing tippers raw, and sours themselves don't kill until (usually) unrealizably late. Using both together to allow you to land the other is not only really unique, but how you get the most out of Marth's entire kit.
Most people early on though didn't even attempt to use sours because M2K, Leo, and redacted said that sours were unsafe on hit and shouldn't be used. And that tippers were a way to "reward your spacing with early kills".
To newer players, generally lower leveled ones, or to those otherwise uninformed; this gives people the impression that tippers are always valued more to Marth (which is just flat out untrue). This lead to a lot of people early on only trying to land tippers or see what tippers
could do off other tippers, and outside of nair1 or upair. There really wasn't a lot to go off of. Pretty early on (I want to say march last year) I and a few others (more then these people ofc but @SkarmVG , @RZL2000 @fletcherssb1 @mibikin and @kyle_roath entertained my madness)
really started testing out how good sours were at combos and strings, and found they were extremely powerful at that job. So we ran with it and just kept discovering all kinds of new shit this new iteration of Marth could do. But now the problem was trying to showcase this to
people who were already convinced by top players that Marth had to play a certain way (and was also completely inferior to Lucina so why even bother) and that was basically impossible LOL. We all got to a point where we had all this information but no one to listen
because we didn't fill some quota of a constantly moving goalpost. Honestly idk how we started to actually convince people, but luckily as time went on people started listening and started seeing that sours were really good. So to me, the phrase "tippers reward spacing"
killed this character early on for many people. Thats what I saw constantly with people constantly complaining that tippers didn't do x or y, or that Marth couldn't do x or y anymore. Because they were stuck in a mindset they got from month 1 impressions of top players.
