been thinking about this a lot lately but like anyone else I see art that makes me uncomfortable or that i even think, god forbid, has a "sus vibe" but it just never occurs to me to screencap it and expose my potentially vulnerable followers to that
like. it's condescending if nothing else. People have eyes and brains and if they stumble upon that artist's work of their own accord they are capable of judging it for themselves. Why would I give that artist more publicity if I don't agree with it?
i understand that the urge to enact vigilante justice is just people trying to exert control over an increasingly chaotic world but it's carceral thinking through and through.
if a stranger on the internet sent a witch hunt after you and destroyed your life to the point of financial vulnerability or homelessness would you honestly think "ah thanks for that I'll stop making creepy art now"? no you wouldn't because that's not how brains work
the nicest thing you can do for yourself in this situation is to just block or mute the artist and move on. Although this is obviously in a situation where there is no hard evidence of actual abuse occuring being perpetuated (victims coming forward, etc)
so what do you do with that frustration and fear instead? look out for friends that are victims. volunteer at and donate to organisations that advocate for victims. talk about your concerns privately with friends or therapists.
these specific kinds of callout posts disproportionately harm at-risk and marginalised people with low follower counts while actual, material abusers in power get to bounce back. idk about you but that just doesn't seem like restorative justice to me
