The "is fanfic literature?" debate is annoying and pointless but it's so funny to me that people frame it as "fanfic is mostly garage unlike REAL LITERATURE" as if the vast majority of real published books aren't also complete garbage
People always are like "ha well your 50k coffee shop naruto au can never compare to tolstoy" and it's like. okay. but where does it compare to milquetoast james patterson thriller number 32?
It's also funny when you see someone yelling at fic readers to read real books and then you go on that person's account and it's immediately clear that all they read is like tweets from the richard Siken bot, hozier lyrics, and idk like that one gay Raven boys book or whatever
Just say you're missing the high of being the smartest kid in your ap lit class and go
Anyway my take is that any attempt to strictly define what "real" art or literature is is ultimately doomed to failure and is often rooted in harmful systems of power. It's just not useful. Pack it up.
Pick up a football
Also imo people writing/creating things for fun/personal fulfilment exclusively is probably like. a big part of what art is all about like who cares if it's not "good enough" to consume on a publishing/literary level. the point of art isn't to be consumed but rather to be made
anyway if any type of fiction is like "not real art", it's books that are cynically written solely to make money a la james patterson (even then I hesitate to like.... call them not real bc what even is art but you know)
Muting this. Stream
