What if you focused on Nigerian Police Colleges for overhaul? Potentially, you can start seeing results in under 2 years and it will cost almost nothing #EndSARS
How does one become a Nigerian Police officer? The ‘training’ can be as little as 6 months. And whatever it is they are teaching them is obviously not very useful #EndSARS
There are only 4 Police Colleges (?) [Ikeja, Kaduna, Maiduguri, Oji-River]. What if you made a demand for an overhaul of the curriculum? Do you think they’re taught things like de-escalation or community relations?
It’s probably an Indaboski type curriculum where all they teach them is the war and the fight. Extend the training period for recruits from 6mths to say 18mths and completely overhaul the curriculum
Then you can track the behaviour of the first set of recruits under the curriculum. It won’t cost anything because this is the kind of stuff the U.K., US, EU etc will happily fund end to end
There’s been a lot of talk about increasing police salaries - a proposal of dubious value - but not much about trying to find out what it is police actually learn in police college and how to change it https://blogs.worldbank.org/africacan/higher-salaries-can-worsen-corruption
It strikes me as sensible to go back to the beginning to teach and train the type of police that Nigerians want to have. For all you know - like many other things in Nigeria - the police training curriculum has been held in aspic for 6 decades since independence
