Parle G - A fond memory from my childhood. some still eat Parle G, while some have moved to flashier brands. Chai & Parle G biscuits truly represented the India of 80s/90s. This thread is about the era when Parle G ruled the markets and hearts. But it’s not mushy nostalgic crap.
My oldest memory of Parle G biscuits is a matte paper packet in which 12 biscuits used to be neatly stacked together. It used to cost Rs 2.50. It represented the very taste of biscuits to us because we rarely got to eat anything else.
Parle G was almost always there in the kitchen cupboard. Not because it tasted good but because it was cheap. Milk Bikis used to be a non-regular affair and the heavenly Nice biscuits used to be such a rarity.

I personally hated Parle G biscuits and I still do.
Even today a packet of Parle G reminds me of my family and the entire colony’s low purchasing power. Everyone in my colony used to eat Parle G regularly and other biscuits rarely, because it was all that could fit in the monthly budget. And mine was not a low income colony.
Parle G represents the era of licence and permit Raj to me, the India before N Rao and the slow march of India after him. It reminds me of Bajaj scooters, whose strength was its market monopoly and the fact that it could magically start after being tilted.
Parle G represents Azhar, the struggling Indian cricket team of the early 90s to me and the infamous match fixing. In short Parle G to me is a reminder of the third world country we were.
There is good nostalgia, like good old school days, long summer holidays, Gully cricket, Big Fun and WWF. And then there is bad nostalgia like HMT watches, Ambassador cars, Congress and Parle G.
I haven’t written this pointless (for many) thread because of Parle and Bajaj’s decision to not give adverts to Republic TV. I hate all media channels equally, I have written this because I have been meaning to write about it from a long time.

Hate comments are welcome.
