Listened to Dr. Anthony Fauci give the #keynote at #CHEST2020 - here are a couple synopsis Tweets from his session. @accpchest
He started out reminding us that SARS-CoV2 is very different from the common cold and presented a current epidemiological snapshot of where we stand in the #COVID19 pandemic - You can read his JAMA article here: https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2759815 @JAMA_current #CHEST2020
He showed us how with the initial shutdowns in March-April with the US and Europe, that our cases never really came down because there was a different in the degree of how we shut down. #COVID19 #CHEST2020
He reviewed the virology of SARS-CoV2 and what we have learned about transmission, and that asymptomatic persons account for 40-45% of infections #COVID19 #CHEST2020 - Here is the link to Oran and @EricTopol’s Annals review: https://www.acpjournals.org/doi/10.7326/M20-3012
Yet, the audience at #CHEST2020 is certainly familiar with the severe consequences of #COVID19 and that older adults are at higher risk of infection
And that people with medical conditions are at risk of severe #COVID19 illness. He noted overweight and obesity, which are incredibly common. #CHEST2020
And the data showing #RacialDisparities in #COVID19 hospitalizations deserves a stand-alone tweet in this summary thread from #CHEST2020. Latinx, Black and Native Americans are disproportionately affected in this pandemic.
Finally, Dr. Fauci talked about current treatments in #COVID19 and where we are with the vaccine trials. He recommended the living NIH Treatment Guidelines document from an #NIH expert panel. Link to the living document here: https://www.covid19treatmentguidelines.nih.gov  @NIHCOVIDTxGuide @accpchest
This was a great way to start off the international meeting. Thank you to the organizers of #CHEST2020 - Looking forward to more presentations over the next several days. @accpchest
