This got a surprising amount of traction so as one more word of publishing advice to ppl who are new to it- target journals that give generously detailed feedback and submit often to those journals. Detailed rejections and major R and Rs taught me how to do it right
Not everyone writes best when following an outline. Some of us realize what we want to say as we write. If that's you, it can be helpful to draft a "reverse outline" after writing your rough draft. It'll show you if you need to move things around. Then revise and double-check
