Let’s be clear about this Kirstie Alley/Shelley Long/Cheers things. Kirstie only replaced Shelley as a female in the cast. After Shelley left, the show changed. Season 6 was like a totally different show featuring all the same characters as a true ensemble comedy.

Kirstie was just lucky enough to join the ensemble. She was nowhere near good enough to actually anchor the show with Ted Danson. The central relationship from season 6 onward (according to the writers and producers) was Sam with the bar and it’s patrons. Simply put...

Kirstie and Shelley aren’t in the same league comedically and it’s insulting to Shelley to even compare the two. Shelley Long is a star that conquered a decade of show business, took time to raise a family, and has continued to create/inhabit great characters even today.

Kirstie Alley exemplified a type that didn’t make sense even at the time, and had the acting range of a walnut.
