interesting to think of monsterhood as a matter of perspective. it’s true that even monster generation is a totally external label, and characters don’t really call themselves monsters.
i’ve been thinking that being a monster in hq is essentially possessing drive and ability in some combo, which you either have or you don’t. but the idea that it’s subjective, that’s it’s /entirely/ based on external perception is really evocative
bc at a certain point, won’t drive and ability pay off and become something that makes you seem monstrous to people watching you, who can’t compete with that? it makes sense that internal motivation will become external
and in a way, in that case, monsterhood becomes a validation of the effort you’ve put in
during school, when players are still developing, that your drive+ability are monster-level may be something that only someone with the right eye can spot (ie. they know how your position looks, or how much you train, or are just v good at the sport themselves)
but eventually, players develop enough that anyone can see it. and hence monster generation becomes a general descriptor, bc you simply need that level of internal ability - and external respect - to be a starting player in the league
i do think that you are supposed to see monsterhood as objective to an extent (in the panel which started this thread, oikawa is pulling a very monstrous face, away from shirabu’s observation - it’s not really what shirabu’s seeing, it’s just who oikawa is)
but perhaps it only transcends to monstrosity once it’s observed. which i think ties in with hinata’s need to be noticed, from getting tsukishima to pay attention to him to not getting an invite to anything during the ball boy arc/national training camp
first mention of hinata as a monster comes from oikawa, someone he yells at to pay attention to him, and who doesnt (he serves at tsukishima again) - at least until hinata jumps and forces oikawa to pay attention. at which point he does

anyway, there’s so much more to say about lines of sight in hq, but i only really intended to post a picture of oikawa being a little gremlin with no thought that it would spiral out into this, so i think i will stop. tldr:
