Honestly, I’m a little fed up with election Twitter. My time on campaigns was middling and brief compared to most. But it was long enough to see how collaborative, magical, and deeply humbling the work is. (1/5)
If campaigns don’t teach you that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, nothing will. I deeply rewrote my own language. I learned that anywhere there’s a chance to say “I made this happen,” there’s a million more accurate reasons to say “I helped make this happen.”(2/5)
I just don’t get the desire to refocus the attention on yourself 2-4 weeks out from the election by running for election Twitter “office” in a bubble of all your peers. I don’t see how that isn’t plainly antithetical to the heart of this work. (3/5)
I know that making this thread complaining about people drawing a bunch of attention to themselves is hypocritical, and I know I have no authority to tell people how to spend their time/energy. I have friends who ran, and this is not a personal attack. (4/5)
But I wanted to make my case for campaigns as a space for humility and collaboration, where the work is more important than the egos and reputations of those doing the work. We know how important the work is or we wouldn’t be doing it. (5/5)
