GENERAL DISCLOSURE TIPS THAT YOU ARE HIV POZ

1. Be selective. In most instances, choosing who to tell is your personal decision. It’s your choice and your right.
2. Consider the 5 W’s. Who do u need to tell? What do u want to tell them about ur HIV infection, and what are u expecting from the people u are disclosing ur HIV status to? When should u tell them? Where is the best place to have this conversation? Why are u telling them?
3. Easy does it. In most situations, u can take your time to consider who to tell and how to tell them. Consider whether there is a real purpose for disclosing or whether you are simply feeling anxious and want to share your feelings.
4. No need to apologize. You have a virus. You don’t have anything to apologize for simply because you are HIV positive.
5. Keep it simple. Just stick to the facts. You don’t have to tell the story of your life.
6. Avoid isolating yourself. If you are unable to tell close friends, family members or other loved ones about your HIV status, allow yourself to draw upon the support and experience of others in the HIV community.
7. Go with your gut. There’s no perfect road map for how to disclose. Trust your instinct, not your fears.
