Respectability politics will always keep D9 organizations complacent. It’s a microcosm of why the Black community itself will always be complacent in social equity & revolutionary policies within our own community. The Divine 9 is a perfect ex. of why a political party wld fail.
No acknowledgement of the humanity of transgender Black women or transgender Black men. No nationwide acknowledgement of LGBTQ members. Pushing the same kinds of initiatives for the same kinds of populations. Often one time or annual. I’ll never forget multiple organizations
Issuing orders to not be seen at protests wearing your letters/symbols back during the Ferguson uprising. I knew then.
The same way the spirit of revolution died in the church after Civil Rights, it died amongst the Divine 9 organizations. It shouldn’t surprise me though. Members of Alpha Phi Alpha told Soror Ida B Wells to stay home from the Women’s Suffrage March way back when so...
To think a political party could be created for Black people without a big ass asterisk atop it that signifies it only includes Jack and Jill Blacks is foolish.
I still have pride in being a Delta but in the same way as before. I still remember the ostracism a girl who was a stripper at a neighboring university faced for even ATTEMPTING to rush. And I didnt have the verbiage for it bc I really young but I just didn’t understand why she
deserved to be publicly harassed and taunted and ostracized for wanting to join an organization that was about aiding the community, furthering your education (which she was doing bc she was in school full time), and sisterhood. All because she was a sex worker.
I literally asked and no one would explain it to me.
There is no community when the “least” of us are not acknowledged or protected.

Sex workers
The formerly incarcerated
The disabled
LGBTQ people
The elderly
Children
