Situated at the junction of Sarayu and Gomti rivers,in Uttarakhand,Bagnath mandir has an elevation of1004 m above fromsea level.Originally known as Vyagreshwar mandir,dedicated to Bhagwan Shiv.Believed to be built in the 6th-7thCE,by Laxmi Chand, it is of Nagara style in brick.
As per the Skand Purana,once Rishi Vashishta was bringing the Sarayu river to this place,where Rishi Markandeya was doing tapasya. In order to not to be disturbed,he appealed to Shiv ji, and then Shiv ji and Mata Parvati appeared as tiger and cow to bless him.
The mandir’s garbhgriha houses the Shivling and other sculptures of which mainly include UmaMaheshwar, Ganesh ji,chaturmukhi Shivji, Mahishasur Mardini, dashavtar Vishnu Bhagwaan etc.The archeological dept of Uttarakhand took over it in1996 and sealed the murtis
