GAMBLING! SHOPPING! SOCIAL MEDIA! GAMING!

Addictions to these things are called "behavioral addictions" in contrast to substance-use addictions.

Behavioral addictions include a

➖ compulsive impulse,

➖a lack of interest in other activities, and

➖ adverse mental repercussions when stopping the activity.

Similar to substance-use addiction,

Our happy neurotransmitter, dopamine, floods our brain

When engaging in these behaviors. (Gambling, shopping, twitter, etc.)

Most people are able to control their behavioral impulses, but

Others are more prone to addiction.

Dopamine is usually a wonderful neurotransmitter.

The brain releases it upon pleasurable, natural activities.

But we can become overly dependent on triggering the dopamine reward

And have difficulty avoiding the troublesome behaviors.

If your gambling or Twitter use affects your job, family, or personal life,

And/or if you are experiencing guilt or poor self care due to your "habit"

You probably need to deal with your addiction.

Also,

Feeling

➖unfulfilled
➖purposeless,
➖and having low self esteem will set you up for addiction.

Cheap dopamine can be hard to resist when you are down.

💥 The brain dysfunction with behavioral addiction is similar to that of substance use addictions as shown on MRI's.

💥 But medication therapy is not as common for behavioral addiction as it is for substance use disorders.

Help for behavioral addictions can include:

-12-step programs
-CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy)
-Counseling for root of underlying issues.
