EMMA WATSON AND THE RUMOURS OF HER BEING CANCELLED: a thread (please add on if you have more info!)
as you guys know people on the tl are asking why emma has been deemed ‘cancelled’. it’s because of this dress worn to a premiere in Wimbledon, London back in 2004
people are saying that it is “culture appropriation” as the dress she’s wearing is a traditional Chinese Cheongsam. an important thing to note is that I’m a Chinese myself, and the following tweets are solely my opinion.
firstly, let’s remember that Emma was 14 during the premiere. if there’s anyone to point fingers at, it should be her stylist. as a 14 year old, especially back in 2006, i DEFINITELY would not fault her for not knowing why it might be wrong.
secondly, as someone that is Chinese, I personally do not see a problem with it. I think that our traditional wear can be shared and celebrated, and Emma’s outfit was not much of a change to traditional Cheongsams you see (eg. it’s not made “shorter and sexier”)
BUT WHY CANCEL TOM AND NOT EMMA!
- Tom was 30+ years old when the mistake was made. He is an adult, and is more than capable enough of knowing why it was wrong
- Emma was 14 when this occurred. She was barely a teenager, and once again, these were definitely different times.
BUT TOM APOLOGISED! EMMA HASNT!!
- i am not trans, so i will not make much comment, but i know trans people that have found his apology to be insufficient.
- this was very recently brought up, so at least give emma a while to respond (even though this shouldnt blow up)
BUT THEY BOTH MADE MISTAKES!
yes, Tom liking the tweet may have been an accident, we don’t fault him for that. what we cannot accept is the ridiculous timeframe taken to address the issue, as way too many people brought it up, which means he could not have “missed it”
YALL PICK & CHOOSE WHO TO CANCEL
- i’ve already explained the Tom situation way too often
- firstly, Emma Watson is a WELL-KNOWN activist, and has done many wonderful things
- secondly, this JUST started to gain speed, so it definitely is not something that would reach her
+
cntd.

hence, Emma would not have had a fair timeline to respond (even though I still believe she has no need to.)
IN CONC,

Emma Watson was 14 when this occurred, so if anybody is to blame it is her stylist, not her. Do not drag her name through the mud for something she might not have had control over. As a Chinese, I find it completely fine, and I think she looked gorgeous.
