Don& #39;t wait. You are the voice you& #39;ve been waiting to hear. A thread.

Before the supreme court ruled in support of gay marriage, I was in DC touring the capitol. In front of the SC building typical school groups wandered about, listening to the typical anti-gay protesters 1/
One group of students was listening to one who was saying some of the most hateful and disgusting remarks about the LGBTQ community and the teacher/tour guide was trying to tell the kids about the importance of free speech. Surely, someone would speak out against this speaker 2/
But the speaker seemed to have authority and the right to talk. She had a sign and was on the steps of the Supreme Court! I looked around. Who is going to tell these kids her opinions aren& #39;t the only ones out there.

*Oh*

It has to be me. 3/
So I walked 10 feet away, got up on those steps and started just talking into thin air. Nothing prepared, just about the "civil union" ceremony i& #39;d attended for some friends and how much they loved each other and how my state wouldn& #39;t let them get married and how it hurt. 4/
Some kids drifted over. I didn& #39;t have talking points, I didn& #39;t say everything right. After a few minutes, the tour group moved on. One kid hung back. "I so glad you said that," he said. Then ran off.

That kid changed my life. You have a voice and it matters.

Be the voice.
