Landslide for Jacinda Arden. https://www.electionresults.govt.nz/
Rockstar welcome for the re-endorsed PM.
Ardern: "Tonight New Zealand has shown the Labour party its greatest support in at least 50 years."
Ardern: We have seen support in seats we may have hoped for but we did not expect. For that I have only two simple words. "Thank You."
Ardern: "Most importantly to the many people who gave us their vote, who trusted us to continue leading New Zealand's recovery."
Ardern: To those who have not trusted Labour before, and the results tell me there may be a few of you, to you I say thank you. We will not take your support for granted and I can promise you we will be a party that governs for every New Zealander.
Ardern with a strong message to the rest of the west: "We are living in an increasingly polarised world. A place where more and more people have lost the ability to see another's point of view..."
Ardern: "I hope that this election is showing that that is NOT who we are as a nation."
- we can debate and see other people's perspective.
Ardern: "This has not been an ordinary election and its not an ordinary time. It's been full of uncertainty and anxiety and we set out to be an antidote to that."
Ardern: "We will build back better from the Covid crisis."
Ardern: "after this result we have the mandate to accelerate our response and our recovery and tomorrow we start." Huge cheers.
Ardern: We know the next few years will not be easy, the last few have not been easy either. But there have been chinks of light that have shone through at the darkest of times."
Ardern: that light has been our determination, our support for each other, our sense of resolve and 'that light has always been more powerful than the most overwhelming darkness.'
Ardern: "Let's step forward together. Let's keep moving."
Seems a long time (maybe Obama) since a leader from the left was able to speak in such an optimistic, unifying and poetic way.
