Definition of Muslim as per Allama Iqbal and Sir Syed was limited to few castes only.
For instance, in Lucknow in 1886, Sir Syed says in his speech:

"O brothers! I have fought Government(British) in the harshest language about these points.
The time is, however, coming when my brothers, Pathans, Syeds, Hashimi, and Koreishi, whose blood smells of the blood of Abraham, will appear in glittering uniform as Colonels and Majors in the army.
But we must wait for that time. Government will most certainly attend to it; provided you do not give rise to suspicions of disloyalty."
Here one must notice the phrase "whose blood smell of the blood of Abraham".

How important the bloodline and lineage played in the imagination of Ashrafs that they were not hesitate to speak publicly about it.

This is an Ashraf speaking before universal voting rights.
Similarly, Allama Iqbal takes a kind at these upper castes that were always in conflict with each other saying:

Yun to Syed bhi ho, Miza bhi ho, Afghan bhi ho,
Tum sabhi kuchh ho batao to Musalman bhi ho.
Again, the same set of castes are being repeated by Allama Iqbal to ask them to unite as Musalman.

They never considered Pasmandas as Muslim enough just because of their caste.
Masood Falahi translates his words as this:

"क़यामत (प्रलय) के दिन जब ख़ुदा मुसलमान तेली, जुलाहों, अनपढ़ या कम पढ़े-लिखे मुसलमानों को दंड देने लगेगा तो प्रार्थी सामने हो कर याचना करेगा कि ख़ुदा तआला न्याय कीजिए"
Tr: One the day of judgement, when God will start punishing teli, julahas, illiterates and other uneducated Muslims, then I will stand infront of God and request Him to forgive them.
So, this is the imagination of celebrated Ashraf leaders of Muslims.

I generally don't get surprised when I see IMT behaving the way they do when it comes to the question of caste.

Like (political) fathers, like sons!!
