The USSR, in a big effort to entice Turkey to join them and keep Baku as an oil source, formed a republic within their borders and called it Azerbaijan. They included Artskah in there. Azeris are ethnically mostly Turkic, and are an Islamic people, therefore allied with Turkey.
That region was called Nagorno-Karabakh, and was an autonomous region. As the USSR was nearing its end, the people of N-K/Artsakh, voted with OVERWHELMING majority to declare independence. Azerbaijan declined. A war broke out. Armenia regained control (in essence won) but the
conflict was frozen by large global powers. As such, the war is technically frozen and the region is technically unrecognized. However it is inhabited and ran by Armenians, as it has ALWAYS been. As stated before, Armenians are indigenous to this land before any Turkic people
even arrived there from Central Asia.
