HIGH ACHIEVERS: Stay-Safe Edition
Ottawa's David Leger has entered his 23rd season as a hockey coach and the 2020-21 campaign, which again sees him overseas, has started like no other on his extensive journey with 11 different teams. @legerdav @1stliga @GeeGeesMHKY
Shortly after arriving in Dunaujvaros, Hungary, in September for training camp with Dunaujvarosi Acelbikak in Erste Liga, the team had a COVID-19 outbreak, including @legerdav. All but four players were affected, but none required medical assistance. @1stliga @GeeGeesMHKY
"We were all quarantined," @legerdav wrote through Messenger.. The players returned to training two weeks before the first exhibition game on Oct. 2. The regular season started Oct. 9 and the Acelbikak have a 1-2 record. @1stliga @GeeGeesMHKY
"I felt fine throughout the quarantine and luckily did not have any demonstrable symptoms." @legerdav added. "Quarantine was fine and in this day and age of Netflix, it was much easier. The team supported us by accessing daily meals and supplies." @1stliga @GeeGeesMHKY
@legerdav was hired as head coach of Dunaujvarosi Acelbikak in January, finished the 2019-20 season and returned this season. Leger, who spent 11 seasons with @GeeGeesMHKY (2003-11), also has coached overseas in Poland, the United States, and Japan. @1stliga
On Sept. 8, @legerdav welcomed and reunited with Ottawa-born player Martin St. Pierre. Leger's first head coaching assignment was with @TheCCHL's Hawkesbury Hawks and St. Pierre was one of his forwards on that 1999-2000 squad. @GeeGeesMHKY @MStPierre39 @1stliga
@MStPierre enters his 17th and final professional hockey season, having played 36 games in the @NHL with Chicago, Boston, Montreal and Ottawa (three games in 2009-10). He has earned two assists in Acelbikak's first three games. @legerdav @1stliga @GeeGeesMHKY
