ok, there are a lot of different types of mental health professionals to choose from and a lot of different types of therapy techniques. but don’t worry! we’re gonna walk you through it and help you break it down.
type #1: psychologists. they’re phenomenal and magical people who are trained to help you recognize your problems and change your behaviours/thoughts. they’re experts on just about every mental health problem under the sun and can help you work thru almost anything!
#2: psychiatrists. these lovely humans are medical doctors who can prescribe medication to their patients (ain’t no shame in the medication game). they usually work hand in hand with psychologists so that your mental health is healthy as fuck
next up: psychotherapists. they’re honestly amazing! we don’t know how else to say it other than they’re just amazing. they specialize in talk-based therapy and help people work though their mental health problems. they’re fantastic listeners and are always SOOOO nice!
aannnd last but not least: counsellor/social worker. these mental health rock stars can sometimes fall under the umbrella of psychotherapists. depending on what they’ve chosen to focus on, their type of therapy can differ from one counsellor/social worker to the other
because not all mental health practitioners practice the same methods, have a phone consult with your potential therapist. ask them about their approach to therapy and what you can expect in your first few sessions. see if you vibe with each other!
