I was heavily involved in advocating for this legislation and it’s prompt passage into law. It was critical to an effective investigation into clerical abuse in the Archdiocese of Dublin. The act provides for public hearings, and does not require secrecy. #Stand4Truth https://twitter.com/maeveorourke/status/1317180195938467840
This ongoing pattern of legislating for extraordinary levels of secrecy and suppressing information about some of the gravest human rights violations in the history of this state is deeply troubling. Especially when it goes against the express wishes of those who were abused.
Instead of suppressing access to this material, the state should be working to ensure it is available in an appropriate manner. We must be able to study and learn from this part of our history if we are to ensure we don’t repeat such dreadful failures. #Stand4Truth
For the state to insist that even those who’s lived experiences are detailed in these records have no right to access them or share them as they see fit is deeply unjust. They are entitled to their own history, the days of secrecy and silence should be long behind us. #Stand4Truth
They have suffered enough because of society’s refusal to see the plain truth of what was being done to them. We denied them then, we ignored their plight. They must not be further silenced or denied their truth. #Stand4Truth
