I attended a press conference earlier today held by a group known as Friends of Louisville Public Art. They've opposed the removal of the Castleman statue.
I've gotten some clarifications from them since.
For one, they haven't filed an appeal with a higher court yet...

Let me back track 1st.
June 8, city crews removed the controversial statue of John B. Castleman from Cherokee Triangle. It was a moment yrs in the making &, in June, the mayor said the decision was based on judge ruling in their favor several days prior. https://wfpl.org/are-confederate-monuments-history-whats-next-now-that-castleman-statue-is-down/

At that time, Friends of Louisville Public Art had a 30-day period to appeal the Circuit Court's decision that cleared the way for the city to move the statue.
FOLPA filed that motion to vacate the decision this summer. Last month, it was denied.

The attorney representing the group says there was a lack of due process.
So, they've notified State Court of Appeals, "an administrative task" as described to me, that they intend to file the legal docs to appeal in "next few weeks." The official appeal has not been filed yet.

Also worth noting that the group says it doesn't take issue w/removal of other monuments, such as the Confederate one that used to be at U of L. They take issue w/removal of this specific one.
Again, a bit more background on that.

They also brought up the removal of the King Louis XVI statue, which was commissioned by the king's daughter & had a tough time finding a home till it landed here (no one seemed to want it). They asked where do we draw the line, should we rename Louisville?
The fate of the Louis statue is TBD. The city cited "public safety" for its removal & it needs a conservation assessment before determining anything else. Also, worth looking more into who King Louis XVI was & why the city is named after him.

Comments were made about other non-Confederate statues coming down around the country. Some see those pieces as monuments to "whiteness" and systems that have oppressed people.

Ok, end of thread.
