intrusive thoughts are a common symptom of many mental illnesses and disorders, including (but not limited to) OCD, PTSD, and eating disorders. they could also just not be a symptom of a mental disorder or illness.
intrusive thoughts are thoughts that, simply put, pop into someone’s head and are extremely difficult to get rid of. these thoughts are extremely disturbing to people who experience them, and change thought processes and effect ones behavior.
intrusive thoughts look different for everyone. for some people it’s obsessing over what a food item will do. for others, violent intrusive thoughts (harm ocd) may occur.
intrusive thoughts don’t mean the person experiencing them is a bad person, because intrusive thoughts don’t reflect someone’s desires. they’re *intrusive* for a reason. they’re not wanted.
TW// pedophilia, POCD.
normalizing this gets controversial when it comes to POCD, also known as pedophilic intrusive thoughts. a misconception is that people with POCD are pedophiles, or want to hurt kids. THIS ISN’T TRUE!

people with POCD are not worse than anyone else, and don’t want to hurt children. they are still intrusive and unwanted thoughts, and the person experiencing them is not at fault!

so why should we normalize these?
people who experience intrusive thoughts are often ashamed of them, and they shouldn’t be. normalizing these encourages people to get help for these thoughts, and can save lives if we let people know it’s okay to get help.
