Vancouver, we have an important job to do leading up to November 3rd. It is, shockingly, not about the American election. It is about @VanCityCouncil's upcoming vote on the Climate Emergency Action Plan. #vanpoli #vanclimateaction A thread:
If @VanCityCouncil fails to accept this plan, there's no way we will do our part to mitigate climate change. Vancouver has been doing pretty well, decreasing carbon pollution by 9% even as the city's grown. But we need to decrease by 41% MORE by 2030. #vanclimateaction #vanpoli
Incremental change is no longer a viable option. We need to take BOLD and comprehensive action. Staff at @greenestcity researched Vancouver's most significant sources of carbon pollution and consulted with the public on options for reducing those emissions. #vanclimateaction
38 recommendations to address @VanCityCouncil's 2019 declaration of a Climate Emergency will be presented to Council on Nov. 3rd. I believe the report containing the 38 recs will be included with the meeting agenda a few days before the meeting. #vanpoli
It's crucial that Council accept the recommendations IN FULL. Picking and choosing between necessary actions will simply make it so we'll fail to address climate change as a city. Picking and choosing is what we've already done, and it's not nearly enough. We MUST be bold.
I collaborated with folks at @greenestcity on one small part of the Climate Emergency Action Plan public consultation, and have utter confidence not only that the plan is based on solid science and understanding of climate action, but also that they have *listened*. #vanpoli
For sure some folks will rail against more bike lanes, more regulations on building, congestion pricing, & more. We know this. But if we don't do ALL of the 38 things in the plan, we will be surrendering to inevitable hardship, unhealthfulness, inequity & suffering. #vanpoli
So let's chat about what's actually coming Nov. 3rd. When staff present the report with 38 recommendations, Council will consider it. If (when 🤞) Council accepts the recommendations, it does NOT mean that they will immediately go into effect. #vanpoli
Accepting the recommendations simply means that City staff will then go about operationalizing each of the 38 recs. As they proceed, staff will bring to @VanCityCouncil the details of the implementation plans they devise & Council will approve or change or reject them. #vanpoli
Which means that the Nov. 3 vote is INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT but not as immediately impactful as one might think (or want). It is simply the next crucial step in addressing climate change in our city. #vanpoli #vanclimateaction
When @VanCityCouncil accepts the Climate Emergency Action Plan, they will be taking the extraordinary and crucial move to BEGIN planning to dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Vancouver. Things won't change for us Vancouverites overnight. #vanpoli #vanclimateaction
If you believe BOLD climate action is needed, let @VanCityCouncil know you're counting on them to accept the Climate Emergency Action Plan IN FULL. @rebeccaleebligh @christineeboyle @AdrianeCarr @MelissaDeGenova @LisaDominato @PtFry @CllrHardwick @sarahkirby_yung @JeanSwanson_
Thanks for getting this far. We have an extraordinary opportunity at a local level to make a huge impact on climate change. If you have ideas for how best to show Councillors how serious we are about wanting them to take these bold moves, let's discuss! #vanclimateaction #vanpoli
