"Lockdowns just have one consequence that you must never ever belittle and that is making poor people an awful lot poorer" Dr. Navarro WHO special envoy on Covid
It's time the u.s. left (in defense of the poor)had a robust discussion on the effects of rolling lockdowns 🧵 https://twitter.com/spectator/status/1314573157827858434
This thread is not a dismissal of the dangers of Covid (I socially distance, wear a mask and wash my hands regularly) but to start a discussion on the motivations of the ruling class issuing sustained lockdowns since they have never cared about the working class or elderly
Right now I see rolling lockdowns as a way to maximize the suffering of all the working class while still getting no closer to a long-term solution. How do we protect workers, the elderly and the vulnerable without an endless cycle of spike➡️lockdown➡️spike➡️lockdown?
China and Vietnam used lockdowns *temporarily* as part of a non-pharmaceutical approach to eradicate the virus (which was successful). Those governments aren't using continued lockdowns. What is the end goal of the u.s. government? wait for a vaccine that is maybe 50% effective?
How many families will be evicted by the time a vaccine comes?
How many families are already food insecure?
How many jobs are never coming back?
How many families are going bankrupt?
Why is the left not fighting for the neediest in our country?
Since right-wing reactionaries in the u.s. are the only major group publicly challenging lockdowns the discussion is reduced to "hoaxes and sacrifice your grandma for the stock market" When the left should be discussing the massive upward transfer of wealth during lockdowns
Revolutionary anticapitalist groups across the world are resisting sustained lockdowns and see them as neoliberal shock therapy and state repression.
In defense of workers, the u.s. left needs to challenge the goals of lockdowns as they are currently being administered
The MAS party of Bolivia has been organizing and resisting lockdowns and school closures. They view lockdowns as a tool of oppression from the christofascist coup government https://twitter.com/KawsachunNews/status/1290160904525422592?s=20
I will continue to add revolutionary groups science-based approach to dealing with Covid-19 when I come across them. what approach would you like to see? Can we care for the highest risk groups for Covid while simultaneously caring for the workers and neediest in our society?
